Teens will join seasoned yuksters for a night of stand-up comedy
Seattle comedian Owen Straw will headline a night of comedy at 8 p.m. Friday, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Straw, who just completed his first cross-country comedy tour, has also won championships in pizza eating and semi-professional wrestling, among other accomplishments.
The night, hosted by Steffon Moody, will also include performances by local stand-up comics Jim Farrell, Per Lars Blomgren, Harris Levinson, Mark Johnson, Erik Lundeen, Anna Berti and Kelly Sullivan. Sullvian and Berti are students at Vashon High School, making their debuts as stand-up artists at the show. Arrive early for what is almost certain to be a standing-room-only show. Admission is $7.
Vocalist croons the standards as part of Women in Jazz series
A jazz concert by singer Cheryl Jewell — part of Vashon Allied Arts’ Women in Jazz series — will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron.
Jewell is a Seattle native whose love of the blues first took her to Chicago and Detroit and then to Los Angles. She has opened for such stars as Leon Russell, Edgar Winter, Jerry Lee Lewis and Don McLean. She returned to the Northwest in 2002, where she has carved out a niche for herself as a sought-after vocalist.
At Saturday’s concert, she’ll be joined by a trio of accomplished musicians to perform such standards as “My Blue Heaven,” “Cry Me a River” and “Danny Boy.”
For tickets, $18 and $22, call 463-5131.

Art history series topped off with talk on Kandinsky
Vashon Allied Arts’ series of art history talks will wrap up at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Blue Heron, when Rebecca Albiani presents a lecture on the Russian-born artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky, a force in the art world equal to his contemporaries Matisse, Picasso, Braque and Klee, promoted abstraction as the ultimate goal of art.
Tickets to the talk are $14 and $18 and can be purchased by calling 463-5131 or visiting www.vashonalliedarts.org.
