Café Luna will be filled with the songs of two well-known singer/songwriters this weekend.
First on tap will be J.W. Sparrow, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.
Show organizers report that Sparrow’s songs have been sung by dozens of recording and performing artists in such diverse places as Iceland, Germany, Japan and in all corners of the United States.
Alice Winship of Victory Music and the Northwest Seaport writes, “J.W. Sparrow is known for his sly wit, eloquent storytelling voice and versatile musicianship.”
His songs have been recorded by Northwest luminaries such as Vashon’s Kat Eggleston, Hank Kramer, Dan Roberts, Victory Sings at Sea, Shanghaied on the Willamette, Dave Roberts, The Shifty Sailors and Allen Ross.
Another singer/songwriter, Nancy K. Dillon, will perform in her first-ever visit to Vashon at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Café Luna.
After completing a four-year degree in five years at the University of Oklahoma, Dillon set out on Route 66 to see something of the world.
Her travels brought her to Seattle, where she has since performed with various bands in the area, including the neo-cowgirl band, Ranch Romance, and honky-tonk group, The Airstreams.
In June 2004, she released her first full-length solo CD, “Just Let Me Dream,” which has received international radio airplay and has been hailed as a wonderfully honest and soulful album. Some critics have compared her music to that of Lucinda Williams and Kasey Chambers.
Dillon’s new album, “Roses Guide to Time Travel,” is slated for an early 2010 release.
Both Sparrow’s and Dillon’s shows are free.
The musical weekend at Luna will wrap up from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, when Celtic music players and knitters are invited to gather at the café for a combination of jigs, reels, polkas and homespun crafting.
