Tibet art at Glendale Gallery

Vashon’s newest art space, the Glendale Gallery, will present “Masters of Tibet,” from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.

This is a one-night-only showing of rare, antique Tibetan Thangkas.

A Thangka is a painting on fabric mounted on a scroll used for teaching or as a guide for contemplative experience.

Thangkas were important teaching devices of the tent culture of nomadic monastic groups in medieval Tibet. Scholars, yogis and priests would travel by yak to distant regions, set up tents, unroll the Thangkas and serve the local people by teaching before moving on to another area.
