The Jewel Tones are up next in Concerts in the Parks series

The Jewel Tones perform a sparkling homage to the music of Motown.

The Jewel Tones will bring the Motown era to Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, in this week’s edition of the free Concerts in the Park series, presented by the Vashon Park District in collaboration with Vashon Events. The show will begin at 7 p.m. with opening act of Rob Hotchkiss and Dianne Krouse.

Vashon Events decided to move the concert from its regular stage in Ober Park to VCA on Thursday morning, due to the threat of wet weather.

Doors for the free show will open at 6 p.m.

“After consulting with our sound crew and the Vashon Park District, we’ve decided to move the Concert in the Park tonight with The Jewel Tones from Ober Park to Vashon Center for the Arts,” said Pete Welch, of Vashon Event. “The weather today is wet and cold and there’s just too much at risk with thousands of dollars worth of sound equipment on the line. Even a slight chance of rain causes us to be extremely cautious. And let’s face it, sitting on wet grass for two hours in 60-degree weather is not very comfortable.”

VCA seats about 300 people, who will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6 p.m.

The Jewel Tones perform a sparkling homage to the music of Motown — a definitive era of American artistry and soul. With lively choreography and dazzling costumes, the trio engages audiences with warmth and nostalgia, welcoming them back to a time when Diana Ross was queen and brilliant women ruled the stage in 1960s girl bands.

The group’s set list includes hits by The Supremes, The Temptations, The Shirelles, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Martha and The Vandellas, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Ronettes, and many other giants of the era.

Opening for The Jewel Tones, at 7 p.m. will be Rob Hotchkiss and Dianne Krouse.

Hotchkiss is the founding member of the band, Train, and co-writer of the Grammy-winning “Drops of Jupiter.”

Vashon saxophonist Dianne Krouse has lately toured with Desdemona’s Dream, a band fronted by the humanoid robot, Desi. She is also known for her joyous appearances with many bands on local stages.

Concert details

Concerts in the Park is a family-friendly event series that gathers the community for free outdoor music performances at Ober Park, where grassy berms provide ideal natural amphitheater seating, and a long lawn gives everyone room to spread out and dance.

The final concert of this year’s series will bring an iconic Vashon band, Troll’s Cottage, to the stage on Thursday, Aug. 29. Natasha Popova will open that show as part of the “New Voices” program created by Vashon Events, showcasing emerging talent in the local music scene.

Iyad’s Syrian Grill will offer up delicious Middle Eastern cuisine in the park, but not at the show at VCA on Aug. 22.
