A comedy troupe named Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad has a Vashon stop planned for July 31, with a show hosted, appropriately enough, by Vashon Havurah.
The variety show, which has toured the United States for the past six years, is led by Susannah Perlman, a comedienne who appeared on the last two seasons of “Last Comic Standing” on NBC. She has also appeared on comedy stages throughout the country and in numerous festivals.
Perlman described Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad as a “mix of comedy, music, spoken-word and show-stopping burlesque, featuring the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat-Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah.”
She joked that the show is “‘Fear Factor’ for Jews, although you don’t have to be Jewish to love these broads.”
Another performer in the show is Dana Eagle, a New Jersey native who has appeared on Comedy Central, the Oxygen Network and national commercials. Her show, “Mood Disorders: A Light-Hearted Romp Through Crippling Depression,” was featured at the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival.
The show also features the talents of Cynthia Levin, a stand-up comic and actress who spent her formative years studying at the acclaimed Second City improvisational company in Chicago.
Jenny Giambattista, a Havurah member, said the comedy troupe approached the Havurah board about bringing the show to Vashon, and the board said yes, hoping to host a fun and laugh-filled evening at Havurat Ee Shalom.
Giambattista explained that Jewish Girls Gone Bad was a very different type of event for the Havurah.
“Some folks think it is too racy — others find it a refreshing change from the more traditional somber events,” said Giambattista. “Anyway, it’s a bit of an experiment for any synagogue to host, but especially here on Vashon.”
