An author who is one of the rising stars of a movement to raise awareness about the benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle will be fêted at a gourmet book party this weekend.

The event, slated to take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at The Hardware Store Restaurant, will be the Island launch for Shauna James Ahern’s new book, “Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef — A Love Story.”

Both Ahern and the eponymous chef, Danny Ahern, will be in attendance, signing copies of the tome, which is part memoir and part cookbook.

Attendees will be able to toast the book with a special cocktail and sample recipes from the book, including shrimp with garlic almond sauce and warm focaccia with curried red lentil puree, prepared by the chef.

What makes the event special is that the Aherns — a married couple — are Island residents. Shauna is best known for her acclaimed blog, “Gluten-Free Girl,” and Danny is a member of the culinary team at The Hardware Store Restaurant.

The book tells the story of Shauna, who was diagnosed in 2005 with a disorder that impedes the digestion of gluten, and Danny, whose relationship with Shauna prompted his exploration of gluten-free gourmet dishes.

Tickets to the event cost $50 per person, which includes the meal and a copy of the book. The meal alone is $25 per person. For reservations, call 463-1800.

After the event, The Hardware Store Restaurant will reopen for dinner, featuring a special menu of gluten-free fare.
