Islanders will be treated to a long, cool drink of some of Vashon’s finest music this weekend, thanks to an intrepid group of McMurray eighth-graders who are raising money to install a new water fountain at the school.

The kids, with help from their parents and teachers, have organized a benefit concert, “2013 Presents,” scheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Sportsmen’s Club.

Admission to the event is $10, with all tickets sold at the door that evening.

The benefit, for ages 21 and older, will also feature wine, beer and light snacks.

What makes the concert special is the breadth of talent assembled for the evening, organizers said.

The line-up will feature the internationally known Vashon-based singer/songwriter Ian Moore and The Terrordactyls, an up-and-coming band formed by Islanders Tyrel Stendahl and Michael Cadiz.

The Maury Island Paperboys will also play a set, as will Poultry in Motion. The evening will wrap up with the sounds of House Engine, another popular Island band.

House Engine includes eighth-grade humanities teacher Chris Anderson, who has worked closely with the students and teachers to organize the benefit.

“The eighth-grade class is a good class, with lots of creative, energetic kids who are full of ideas,” Anderson said. “They wanted to come up with something lasting for McMurray — and this seemed like the perfect way to leave their mark for kids in the future.”

Anderson said the students plan to work with a tile artist to create tiles that will provide a unique “Class of 2013” backsplash for the new water fountain.

The class has estimated the cost of the water fountain to be $1,300 — an affordable goal. If more than that amount of money is raised this weekend, the balance will go to providing scholarships for McMurray’s “Exploratory Week,” which brings workshops and other opportunities to McMurray students at the end of every school year.

The idea of McMurray students giving back to the school is not new. Last year, the sixth-grade class raised funds to build an outdoor classroom at McMurray.

Jen Sullivan, a parent who is helping organize the “Class of 2013 Presents” event, hopes this year’s project is similarly successful.

“It’s a chance for McMurray parents — and anyone else who likes good music  — to come, gather, catch up, hear great music and support the eighth-grade class at the same time,” Sullivan said.
