“Whistling Monster” is coming
Vashon Allied Arts will bring “The Whistling Monster” to the stage in the spring, as a culmination to several upcoming classes for youth.
“The Whistling Monster,” based on a South American folk tale, began its life on Vashon last year, when 450 students in Andy James’ music class at Chautauqua Elementary School adapted the story with help from Island artists. The result was a CD composed, played and sung by the young students.
Shortly after the CD was released, Blue Heron Dance Director Christine Juarez inquired about producing “The Whistling Monster” as a dance performance. The result is a number of classes that will support the dance performances, which will take place at Vashon High School on May 6, 7 and 8.
Classes, which will begin in late January, will include a youth chorus, instructed by James, for grades 3 to 8. A drum corps, led by Geoff Johns, is also for grades 3 to 8. A class in set design for grades 5 to 12 will be taught by Kim Newell, and a class in costume design for grades 6 to 12 will be led by Patricia Toovey. Steffon Moody will also teach a class in puppet-making for grades 3 to 6. Dance classes for members of the Blue Heron Dance Company will also focus on the story of “The Whistling Monster.” Tuitions vary for each class, and scholarship applications are encouraged. To find out more, call Wendy Finkleman at 463-5131 or pick up a copy of Island Arts.
