Jazzy times at the Bike

Island Jazz Quintet will play a free, all-ages show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.

The group, comprised of Maggie Laird on vocals and melodica, Richard Person on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tom Wilkins on piano, Todd Zimberg on drums and Todd Gowers on bass, has received national acclaim for its mix of improvisational jazz, bossa nova and cabaret arragements.

A critic wrote in Victory Review that the group “would be right at home in a New York cabaret.”

The band formed in 1999, holding jam sessions in a cabin deep in the Vashon woods.

Ten years later, the group has released three albums, including it’s most recent CD, “Who Knows.”

The Bike will also host a free show on Mother’s Day, with the band Island Fusion set to take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 9, for a free, all-ages show.

Island Fusion formed in the late 1990s after Vashon musicians Steve Meyer, Jack Barbash and Fletcher Andrews came together to explore and celebrate the music of Pat Metheny and other jazz instrumentalists. The band also plays original compositions.

Luna has open mic, two bands and wine

Café Luna has three free music events planned, starting with an open mic at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7.

David Ray will host the open mic, and Islander Jumaane Cabrera will be the featured performer.

Cabrera is a 19-year-old singer/songwriter who describes his style as “Island-folk-hop” and cites influences including Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and Kanye West.

The next evening, Friday, May 8, will feature a combination of wine and song.

The fun will start from 6 to 8 p.m. with a wine tasting with Ron Irvine, owner of Vashon Winery.

He’ll feature five different wines from Spain — Palomino, Alearino, Tempranillo, Grenache and Monastrell. The cost is $8 per person.

At 8 p.m. Marilyn Kay and Company, an up-and-coming band from North Kitsap, will perform a free show, blending bluegrass, Americana and classic country.

Rochelle Munger Wolfe will be featured on banjo.

The Island band 5:01 will bring country/rock/folk fusion to the café at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9. They’ll play two free sets.

The band describes itself as a “vocally driven group that considers many dilemmas, ranging from true love to political commentary, all spiced with a sense of humor.”

5:01 members include Islander Jack Barbash on piano, Luke McQuillin on electric guitar, Mark Wells on vocals and acoustic guitar, Geordan Mitchell on drums and Doug Ringer on bass.
