A local chanteuse sings at Nirvana

Local singer/songwriter Cami Lundeen will perform a free show at 7 p.m. Friday at Nirvana. Lundeen, who is currently raising funds for a debut album through a Kickstarter campaign, has an alternative style with a folk-pop sound.

Musicians bring baroque works to life

Salish Seas Early Music Festival will present a concert, “The Broken Consort in Milan, Paris and London,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bethel Church. Players will include flutist Jeffrey Cohan, violinist Courtney Kuroda, violist Steven Creswell and harpsichordist Kyobi Hinami. They’ll play period instruments and explore late renaissance and early baroque works by Giovanni Paulo and Andrea Cima, Giovanni Bassano, Girolamo Frescobaldi, William Byrd, William Lawes, Thomas Morely and Pierre Guédron. A donation of $15 to $20 is suggested, with free admission for anyone 18 and younger.

A film tells the story of an artist

An upcoming screening of “Terry Turrell: In Layers,” a documentary film by John Forsen and Fidget.tv, will augment VALISE Gallery’s current show, “Lessons from the Heart.” The exhibit — the last show curated by Mia McEldowney, a well-known Seattle gallery owner who moved to Vashon several years ago — includes the work of Northwest artists Joe Max Emminger, Julie Paschkis and Terry Turrell. The film will be shown at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Land Trust Building. VALISE Gallery is open 11 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. “Lessons from the Heart” will be on view until March 30.

Guitar concert happens above the music shop

Guitarist Ken Jacobsen will be play a concert at 7 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Island Music Studio, located above the music store. He’ll play a variety of music, including Spanish guitar music, Middle Eastern-inspired pieces by Lou Harrison and Carlo Domeniconi and songs by John Coltrane and Brazilian composers Heitor Villa Lobos and Luis Bonfa. Tickets, $10 general and $5 for students, are available at Vashon Island Music, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Local composer has a debut at Benaroya Hall

Vashon composer Jason Staczek is one of eight West Coast musicians who will perform a new work at a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Each composer in the concert, “Celebrate World Music,” was asked to create an original piece of music for an instrument he or she admires but is not professionally trained to play. Staczek’s composition is dedicated to his great uncle and features the Hungarian cimbalom, a type of dulcimer. Called “Lila Sziv,” the composition traces the anguish of parents waiting for their youngest son to return from war. A Dutch singer performs at Snapdragon

Lily Kiara, a visiting guest artist from The Netherlands, will play and sing a free show of acoustic folk and pop songs at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Snapdragon Café. Kiara will also perform in a dance arts piece, “True Reverse,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Hanna Barn. (See article, page 10.) Kiara has been to Vashon before, first arriving here in 1997 to take part in the Diverse Dance Research Retreat, an annual event at the time, organized by Joan Hanna, Karen Nelson and others. Her songwriting and performance style, Nelson said, “walk the line between songs and poems, with work inspired by poetry and the love of unfamiliar forms.”

Accordion Babes are coming to town

Six women who call themselves the Accordion Babes will make a Vashon stop with their musical variety show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Vashon Cohousing’s common house. Admission to the show is $5 to $15, with no one turned away for lack of funds. The show will include all kinds of music, from Cajun to Balkan to blues. The accordionists will also bring along their fiddles, guitars, trombones and voices to provide a full band sound, filled out by veteran drummer Aharon Wheels-Bolsta. Dance to live music at Ober Park

Solarwind, an instrumental band that plays jazz, rock and “dynamic improv,” will offer weekly dance sessions from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Ober Park. This week’s offering will include a musical vignette inspired by “An American in Paris.” Bring ribbons, fabric and streamers and enjoy improvisational dance. Tickets are $5 at the door. Children are welcome.
