The chamber orchestra will play
Vashon-Maury Island Chamber Orchestra, led by musical director Karin Choo, will perform two concerts — one for adults and one for kids — on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Vashon Methodist Church. The children’s concert takes place at 11 a.m., and the evening concert will start at 8 p.m. The concerts will feature clarinetist Terri Garrett in her first solo performance on the Island. Garrett, who moved to Vashon three years ago, has performed with orchestras including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Symphony, Northwest Sinfoneitta and Tacoma Symphony. The wide-ranging program will include Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” Villa-Lobos’ “Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5,” Copland’s clarinet concerto and Morton Gould’s “Spirituals for Strings and Harps.” The orchestra will also be joined by Michelle Wilcox on harp, Ken Jacobsen on guitar and Linda Lee on piano. The children’s concer will be hosted by Islanders Kim Thal and Stacey Hinden. Admission to the kids’ concert is by “pay what you can” donation. Tickets for the evening concert are $10 and $7.

Talented teens go ‘Into the Woods’
Drama Dock will launch an ambitious new youth theater project with a full-scale production of “Into the Woods, Jr.” next weekend. The show, directed by veteran opera singer and theater artist Elizabeth Ripley, has been in rehearsal for past several weeks, with Island thespians ages 11 to 18 tackling the musically challenging, Tony award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The kids in the show have also helped build the set, sew the costumes and do other behind-the-scenes tasks to get the show ready. The musical, suitable for all ages, is a moving and funny mash-up of several fairytales, including “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” “Cinderella” and other stories. Beloved songs from the show include “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky” and “No One is Alone.” Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30 and 31, at Vashon High School. Tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for students, are on sale at Books by the Way and Vashon Bookshop.
