Vashon Pianist Paul Swenson will perform a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Holy Spirit. The performance will be a benefit for the church.
Featured in this concert is the Vashon premiere of “Palais De Mari,” a single-movement, half-hour work by Morton Feldman.
Feldman emerged as one of the United States’ most significant post-war composers.
“Palais” is one of his late works, which reflects Feldman’s interests in atmospheric works, whose slow evolution is crafted to take place in real time, as opposed to narrative or symbolic time.
“‘Palais” is a piece which lives and breathes in the present,” said Swenson. “Listening to it can be likened to spending time in the woods, watching the sun travel across the sky; the real action takes place in the hearts of the listeners and observers.”
Also featured will be an assortment of Bach keyboard works, taken from various sources, but all in the key of G.
And to round out the program, Swenson will play two major works by the French Impressionist composer Erik Satie.
Swenson is an island pianist specializing in postmodern and unusual repertoire.
Susan McCabe, of Voice of Vashon, raved about Swenson’s talents.
“Paul puts his heart and soul into whatever he takes on,” she said. “He is a joy to watch as a performer, energetic and soulful.”
Tickets will be available at the door for a suggested donation of $20 and $15 for kids and seniors.
