Eight years ago, island painter Pam Ingalls hung a portrait exhibition called “Facing Vashon” at The Hardware Store Restaurant gallery.

The show inspired Ingalls to travel to other parts of the world — like Africa and Guatemala — to paint the people she met in the villages she visited for an annual spring portrait exhibit.

This year, Ingalls stayed close to home, choosing to paint members of the island’s Latino community for her current show “Facing Latinos on Vashon Island.”

“We have this other community on Vashon,” Ingalls said, “which is so interesting but mostly invisible, and I wanted to connect the two communities as the start of a bridge.”

The show will be up until the end of May. As is her custom, Ingalls will donate some of the proceeds to the Latino community.

“Some of the money goes back to the people I paint,” Ingalls said. “It’s my way of giving back.”
