Look to the skies at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, to see the magic and wonder of Open Air, an annual outdoor aerial festival at Open Space for Arts & Community.

The festival features internationally touring artists, local aerialists, and aerial students.

Taking place on Open Space’s Great Lawn — an idyllic setting to see agile and sometimes comic acrobatic acts flying through the air — Open Air is beloved by many as a perfect way to spend a summer day. Islanders are encouraged to bring family, friends, a blanket, and a picnic basket to share while they “ooh” and “ah” over spectacular choreography.

“We host countless events throughout the year, but there is something special about Open Air,” said producer Janet McAlpin. “It’s a gift to the community. Admission is by donation, and our main goal is to bring our island neighbors together in celebration of the unbreakable bond between arts and community. With last year’s record-breaking attendance, it’s easy to see the universal appeal of these acts.”

Open Space for Arts & Community’s UMO School of Physical Arts, whose students will be among the performers, educates island youth in areas including parkour, aerial, and circus skills.

The festival will also feature artists including renowned aerial entertainer Amy Funbuttons — a multi-disciplinary circus performer specializing in aerial rope. She has performed at the Woodland Park Zoo and Fred Wildlife Refuge, as well as past Open Air events. The full lineup of performers can be found at openspacevashon.com.

The event has a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for children, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Service dogs are welcome, but leave your pets at home. Walk-ups are welcome, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP for the event at openspacevashon.org.
