The Open Space for Arts & Community invites islanders and guests to come fly with them at its fourth annual outdoor aerial festival, Open Air, this weekend.

In the shade of the Open Space’s fir trees with Mount Rainier for a backdrop, an array of aerialists will create a show that over the years has included dancing dragons, summertime snow, magic and poetry.

This year, producers and performers Janet McAlpin and Lynelle Sjoberg have invited the best aerial acts in the region along with local favorites, drawing on talent from the UMO School of Physical Arts as well as the Rock Island String Collective (RISK).

This year’s aerial acts will include trapeze artists Duo Volta from Seattle, aerialist Tanya Brno, also from Seattle, and a new trapeze duo, Dizzy Daze. Vashon’s four flying women — Janet McAlpin, Lynelle Sjoberg, Kathy Zybrk and Arlette Moody — will premiere a new bungee dance, Tom Pruiksma will perform his magic tricks, and there will be music by RISK Jr.

Maria Glanz, a spokeswoman for the Open Space, noted the skill of the visiting artists.

“They truly are world class,” she said. “They have performed not just in Seattle, but around the country.”

Glanz said she does not believe any trapeze artists have performed at Open Air previously, and this year two of the trapeze acts are duos — which adds to the thrill of the art.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket for seating. Picnics are welcome, and refreshments will be for sale. Admission is by donation, and no one will turned away for lack of funds.

Open Air is also adding two new options for attendees. The Biggest Clothing & Art Swap tables will be open for trading at 2:30 p.m. Guests can bring clothing to pass on and perhaps find new worn clothing to bring home. At the end of the day, any unwanted items will be delivered to Granny’s Attic.

The Open Space is also collaborating with the Vashon Sheepdog Classic, which will take place this weekend as well. A shuttle bus will run from the sheepdog trials at Misty Isle Farm to the Open Space before Open Air begins, and then return people back to Misty Isle after the show.

The show will begin 4 p.m. Saturday at the Open Space for Arts & Community, 18870 103rd Ave. SW.
