The Deep Energy Orchestra, a band of accomplished, international musicians brought together by local composer and bassist Jason Everett, will have a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Open Space for Arts & Community.
The show is a CD/DVD release concert for “Playing with Fire,” the group’s new album, which features Everett’s compositions blending classical music, jazz, rock and Indian fusion.
If some islanders only know Everett as a firefighter or the former director of Vashon Allied Arts, the concert will be a chance to discover that music has always been the driving passion of his life. In recent years, he has continued to add to a long musical resume with a number of diverse projects, recordings and performances in Seattle and beyond.
He was recently named as an artist in residence at the prestigious Jack Straw Cultural Center, in Seattle, where “Playing with Fire” was recorded last year.
With his creation of the Deep Energy Orchestra, Everett has pulled together an ensemble of musicians that includes well-known bassist Trey Gunn, Indian percussionist Salvaganesh, who has played with luminaries including Shakti and John McLaughlin, and acclaimed seven-string violinist, Radhika Iyer. Other players include tabla player Anil Prasad, Rachel Nesvig on violin, Aleida Gehrels on viola, and Phil Hirschi on cello.
For Everett, who started studying classical music as a small child, and was playing in jazz clubs professionally and falling in love with Indian music by his late teens, the band and new album are the fruit of a long journey of growth and discovery.
“This project is an exciting culmination of that history and my love for those musical styles,” he said, listing off his favorite genres as classical, jazz, groove, funk, prog rock, and world music including Indian and Flamenco.
These influences have contributed to the complex but not contradictory mix of the Deep Energy Orchestra. Band member and fellow bassist Gunn said the process of recording “Playing with Fire” had been a pleasure.
“I was surprised how easily these pieces flowed out of us when rehearsing and recording,” he said. “It is a clear testament to Jason’s writing that music this challenging felt so natural.”
Tickets for the concert are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Purchase in advance at www.openspacevashon.com.
