Women at the Bike

Two women vocalists — Tai Shan and Alice Evans — will take to the stage in two separate shows at The Red Bike on Friday, Feb. 4. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. with Shan, a soprano who, according to organizers, plays complex guitar melodies. She has performed across the West Coast at venues such as Seattle’s Benaroya Hall and San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral.

Seattleite Alice Evans, who will performing solo and then with her band, will close out the night. Evans is a jazz pianist and singer-songwriter.

This is an all-ages show until 11 p.m., 21 and over after that. There is no cover charge.

Salish Sea period music returns

Guitarist Oleg Timofeyev and flutist Jeffrey Cohan will explore two distinct worlds of musical expression in “Irish, Scottish and the Russian Guitar” at the second Salish Sea Early Music Festival at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10.

The two musicians will perform on period instruments, including the one-keyed wooden baroque flute, an eight-keyed flute made in 1820 and a Russian seven-string guitar.

Their concert — the second of four they plan to perform on Vashon — will include “Bridgit Cruise,” written for his girlfriend by the blind Irish harper Turlough Carolan, “The Marvel of Peru” from Scottish transverse flutist James Oswald’s The Seasons and variations on “Auld Land Syne,” based on a Scottish folk melody with words by the Scottish poet Robert Burns.

The concert will be held at Vashon United Methodist Church. The suggested donation is $15, with youth 18 and under free. See www.concertspirituel.org for more information.
