A teacher and a student play
Daryl Redeker and Kiki Means will share the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Redeker is a well-known Island guitarist, singer, songwriter and teacher, and Means, an Island teen who is becoming increasingly known for her musical gifts, is his student. The show is free and for all ages until 11 p.m.
Americana music at Café Luna
Singer and songwriter David Robert King will bring a decade’s worth of experience playing blues, bluegrass and rock and roll to a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Café Luna. His first solo project, “Take Me Home,” was released in July 2009. He cites Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt as his musical heroes.
Waterlogged plugs in at the Bike
Waterlogged, an Island band comprised of Roger Taylor, Kevin Almeida, Pat Reardon and Gib Dammann, will play a free, all-ages show at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Red Bicycle Bistro. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and older after that.
Robyn Landis plays ‘New Works’
Award-winning songwriter Robyn Landis will be joined by a group of stellar musicians, including Paul Elliot, Cary Black, Charles Reed and Fletcher Andrews in the latest installment of Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Blue Heron. Landis has received high praise for setting stories to music with unflinching honesty, soulful guitar work and a sweet, wistful voice. She recently released “Many Moons,” a debut album that won critical raves and charted on folk radio. Since 2005, she has accrued more than 45 songwriting awards and honors, including the 2009 Grand Prize in the folk category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, first place at Woody Guthrie Folk Festival and second place in the Unisong International Songwriting Competition. Tickets, available at Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest and brownpapertickets.com, are $12 for VAA members, seniors and teens and $15 general admission.
VAA hosts show next week, too
Vashon Allied Arts has a busy musical lineup planned for Oct. 8 and 9. The organization’s 2010-2011 Chamber Music Series will kick off at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 8, at the Methodist Church, when the acclaimed group Odeonquartet will perform three centuries of Russian chamber music. Tickets are $10 to $22.
The Pacific Northwest duo and Grammy-award winning artists Tingstad and Rumbel will return to Vashon for a show at the Blue Heron at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. The concert is sure to delight fans with the duo’s trademark blend of finger-style guitar and melodic woodwinds. Tickets are $14 and $17.
