Author, mythologist and well-known Islander Michael Meade will bring his trademark blend of storytelling, poetry and discussion to Vashon Methodist Church next weekend.
The events, which include an evening presentation on Friday, Oct. 1, and an all-day workshop on Saturday, Oct. 2, will celebrate the release of Meade’s latest book, “Fate and Destiny: The Two Agreements of the Soul.”
The book explores folktales, myths and spiritual ideas from many cultures, weaving perspectives from these stories into commentary about the spiritual challenges of modern times.
The book has already earned high praise from booksellers and Meade’s contemporaries in the fields of mythology, anthropology and psychology.
According to Rick Simonson, a longtime buyer for Elliott Bay Book Company, Meade’s new book “delves into cultural, personal, and cosmological realms with language that’s rich, textured, and resonant — an arresting pleasure for eye and ear as one reads.”
Jack Kornfield, a well-known Buddhist teacher, said the book was full of “wild blessings and wisdom.”
Meade’s Friday performance will be centered on themes found in the book.
The workshop on Saturday is recommended for people engaged in creative work, community building, therapy, mentoring, teaching, healing, spiritual development and ecological and social activism.
Michael Meade will present “Finding Fate, Facing a Destiny” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Vashon Methodst Church. Admission is by donation, and proceeds will support Mosiac Multicultural Foundation’s intercultural programs for at-risk youth.
Meade will also lead a workshop, “The Initiated Soul, The Awakened Self,” from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Vashon Methodist Church. The cost of the workshop is $85. Participants should register in advance, at www.mosiacvoices.org.
