Vashon Allied Arts will honor National Women’s History Month by bringing award-winning Los Angeles playwright Jude Narita to Vashon.

Narita’s will perform her one-woman show, “From the Heart,” at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Blue Heron Art Center.

“From the Heart” was described as “profoundly moving” by The Los Angeles Times. The play explores and celebrates the lives of different Asian and Asian-American women.

The women characterized in the play include a Korean student struggling in her new American high school; a Cambodian refugee amazed by America’s abundance, yet haunted by memories; a Japanese- American woman who carries her mother’s memory of internment; a little girl caught in the bombing of Hiroshima and a young Chinese-American seeking her own all-American identity.

Narita performed “From the Heart” in New York City’s 2007 Asian American Theater Festival.

“Narita knows how to tell a story, convey the heart of a character, and take us into a different culture, all at once … an amazing accomplishment,” wrote The San Francisco Bay Guardian.

The playwright has won many honors, including the Integrity Award from the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, a Los Angeles Fellowship and eight L.A. Cultural Affairs grants.

She has toured her work throughout the United States for nearly two decades.
