More than 100 young dancers will be transported to Never Never Land in a new production of “Peter Pan,” slated to run this weekend at Vashon High School.

The show, a production of Vashon Dance Academy, is the 15th annual production of a world premiere dance piece staged by the school. 

Cheryl Krown, the school’s artistic director, is known on the Island for delivering up lively shows with an inventive mix of dance styles. 

And while Krown has twice before based a Dance Academy production on the story of Peter Pan, she said that this time the production will be completely different. A wealth of new music and characters has been incorporated to reflect the talents of her current students. 

“I pick the shows based on the students I have, but ‘Peter Pan’ is also my favorite,” she said. “There’s a lot about trust and friendship and things that really seemed to suit the group of kids we have this year.”

The show will feature Chloe Zimberg and Laura Hicks in the title role of Peter. Wendy will be played by Allison Spencer and Lizzy Schoen, and Tinkerbell will be performed by LeAnne Anderson and Anna Hicks. 

A host of other dancers will play characters, including mermaids, stars, fairies and even the trees in the forest of Never Never Land.

And in keeping with a Dance Academy tradition, a corps of dancers’ fathers will also appear in the show — this time as Captain Hook’s bumbling crew of pirates. The all-important comic role of Hook has gone to Island thespian Louis Mangione. 

Krown said the show will appeal to all ages, with something for everyone, from boisterous sword fights to complex dance pieces performed by the company’s most advanced students.

“I want the the community to come and be entertained — and they will be,” she promised.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26. Tickets, $13 and $11, are on sale at Books by the Way.
