Laura Love, a Northwest performer known for her embrace and mastery of many musical styles, will concentrate on bluegrass and old-time American folk music at a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Blue Heron.

Love’s concert will be a collaboration with Orville Johnson, a master of country blues guitar.

Known as a “musician’s musician,” Johnson is a frequent collaborator, sideman and recording producer for Northwest musicians and an in-demand teacher of all things stringed.

Johnson contributed electric guitar, vocals and bass to Love’s latest album.

Love, who performed for VAA’s Summer Music Festival at Camp Burton several years ago, is known for her soaring vocals, funky bass playing and her vastly divergent musical tastes.

Since she began recording and touring in the early 1990s, Love has written and recorded in many genres, including funk, blues, R&B, jazz, gospel, folk, country and bluegrass.

In 2007, she self-released the acoustic “NeGrass,” produced by Seattle fiddler Barbara Lamb.

The album featured some of Nashville’s top musicians, including Tim O’Brien, Tracy Nelson and Rob Ickes.

Love’s new CD, “The Sweeter The Juice,” is a follow up to “NeGrass.” It features original tunes, a handful of traditional folk and country, civil rights anthems and spirituals.
