Vashon Film Society will roll out the red carpet this Sunday for a gala, all-ages Oscar Night celebration at Vashon Theatre, featuring paparazzi, limo rides, contests and a live broadcast of the Academy Awards Ceremony.
It’s an annual tradition for the Film Society, which holds the event for a good cause — to raise funds for its scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
Film Society member Leslie McMichael promised the annual Oscar Night party would combine “theatrical fun and thrift store chic.”
The evening will include not only the Academy Awards telecast, but also community-minded fun during the commercial breaks.
There will be trivia contests and, of course, costume competitions.
“With ‘Avatar’ boasting nine Academy Award nominations, we wonder if blue-skinned aliens will be a trend on Vashon’s red carpet this year,” joked McMichael.
There will also be a prize for the best celebrity look-alike, and a “Cher” award, bestowed by a professional Cher impersonator, will go to the Islander with the most outrageous costume.
Other prizes will be given to the best dressed little boy and girl, the best dressed teens and the best dressed couple. There will even be a special seating section and prize for those who come to the gala wearing their pajamas.
Light meals, prepared by SheFidgets Catering, will be available for $8, and beverages will be sold by Rotary Club and at the concession stand.
Tickets to Oscar Night cost $12 on the day of the gala, but $10 advance tickets are available now at Vashon Theatre, Books by the Way, Vashon Bookshop or at www.brownpapertickets.com. The limo and photo package is $10 per carload with digital reprints available from Flash Photo. The best value is a $30 package deal, which includes event entrance, limo ride and photo, and food and beverage.
