Vashon High School students will take the stage at an open mic show at 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Bicycle Bistro.

The evening will be hosted by VHS students Sage Everett, Sam Crosby and Alec Spencer, who will introduce a constellation of local teenage stars performing  music, comedy, magic, poetry, dance and more.

Admission is $5, with proceeds earmarked for the high school’s senior party fund. Funds also help cover the costs of graduation night and provide scholarships to graduating students.

Maggie Laird, a parent and local performer who is helping to organize the event, said the open mic was conceived to involve the whole community in making sure that VHS’s graduation night would be a safe and satisfying evening. She also said she was expecting a great show.

“Those who are regular attendees of the open mics at Vashon High School, as well as those who are new to the scene, are sure to be entertained and impressed by the wealth of student talent,” Laird said.

She added that some material might not be suitable for young children.

Student acts will kick off the evening from 8 to 10 p.m. After that, a jam session hosted by Laird and her husband, percussionist Todd Zimberg, will provide a platform for students, parents and other adults in the community to make music together. At 11 p.m., the music will continue for the 21 and older only set, with Laird and Zimberg welcoming more parents and special guests to the stage.
