Two Wall Gallery has announced a winner in its Vashon flag competition — Adria Pontious’ design, featuring a “bike in the tree” motif, has garnered the most votes.
The competition began in May, with an exhibit at the gallery that featured 41 designs. A panel of judges was originally slated to decide which flag was the winner, but that group opted out of the decision and instead asked the public to cast votes.
During the exhibit’s month-long run at the gallery, approximately 350 people turned in ballots, but the competition hit a snag when no flag won a clear majority of the votes. A vote-by-e-mail runoff election was then held, with Islanders being asked to chose among flags designed by Debra Paulsen, Judy Kullman and Adria Pontious.
Pontious’ design came out on top, but according to Greg Wessel, one of Two Wall’s curators, the artist will have to defend her title as winning flag artist next year.
“What did become clear through this entire process was that although Adria’s design ended up with the most votes and it is clearly liked by a lot of people, there is not a clear consensus among Islanders that this design should be the final design approved as Vashon’s ‘official’ flag in perpetuity,” said Wessel, who added that another flag competition will be held at the gallery in in 2011.
