A new chamber music series on Vashon is proving to be so popular that Vashon Allied Arts has added a second performance to the next concert in the series.

The concert, which will include “Quartet for the End of Time” by Oliver Messiaen and a selection of French songs performed by Island diva and Vashon Opera founder Jennifer Krikawa, will take place next weekend, with performances on Friday and Saturday nights at the Blue Heron Art Center.

The series is curated by Rowena and Douglas Hammill, a pair of accomplished cellists who moved to the Island recently, bringing with them impressive resumes and a long list of credits performing in orchestras and renowned chamber music groups up and down the West Coast.

“Doug and Rowena are excellent musicians, and they have a following,” said Janice Randall, director of performing arts for Vashon Allied Arts. “The quality of musicanship they have been able to bring to the Island is incomparable. This is the kind of music you would hear in Seattle or San Francisco, and they are making it available on Vashon.”

Rowena Hammill is especially enthusiastic about the upcoming concert.

“We’re so excited to be presenting ‘Quartet for the End of Time,’” she said. “It is a masterpiece that contains some of the most compellingly beautiful music written in the 20th century.”

The Hammills have asked a number of accomplished musicians to appear as guests in the ongoing series, and next weekend’s program is no exception.

In addition to Krikawa’s solos, the concert will also feature an appearance by clarinetist Jennifer Nelson.

Nelson is currently principal clarinetist with Pacific Northwest Ballet and Auburn Symphony orchestras.

Other musicians will include pianist Jeanine Jacobson and violinist Karin Choo. Rowena Hammill will play cello. There will also be remarks by Andy James, who teaches music at Chautauqua Elementary.

The concert was originally scheduled for one night only, but a performance on Saturday was added after Friday’s performance sold out.

“I’m so excited we were able to add a second night,” said Randall. “I can’t believe all those musicians were available for a second night.”

Hammill agreed.

“It’s going to be a program to remember,” she said.

Vashon Allied Art’s next chamber music concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19 and 20, at the Blue Heron Art Center. Friday night’s concert is sold out. Tickets, $18 and $22, are on sale at Blue Heron and www.brownpapertickets.com.
