A house concert is an easy way to experience live music in an intimate and warm setting and is an up-close and personal way to meet musicians. Islanders have an opportunity to attend a house concert with the acoustic strings and harmonizing voices of Marla Fibish and Bruce Victor of Noctambule, and Tim Connell in a Vashon living room at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Islander Susan McClellen arranged for the evening that will include traditional Celtic songs, choro tunes from Brazil and poetry of well-known poets set to original music. The genesis of the event has its roots in Arizona, where for the past four years McClellen has attended the Portal Irish Music Week in a small town outside of Tucson. There, McClellen met and became one of Fibish’s students — a piece of good fortune considering Fibish’s classes always have a waiting list.
“Normally, she teaches at much larger schools and Irish music camps, but Portal allows for a more intimate setting and more personalized instruction,” McClellen said. “She has quite a following, with people attending from Montana, Utah, California, Texas, Arizona, the East Coast and Great Britain.”
That following means when Fibish and her partner Victor — both hailing from San Francisco — go on tour, they perform not only in large venues, but also in people’s houses. Fibish sent an email earlier this year asking McClellan about similar settings in the Northwest.
“I was so excited,” McClellen said. “I talked to friends in the Celtic acoustic music world and others who enjoy both music and poetry. With their help, Marla’s group now has additional venues in Bellevue, Whidbey, Port Angeles, on the coast and in Portland.”
Fibish is well-known in the Irish music world for her versatility on the mandolin, her compositions, setting poetry to music and her alto voice. Her partner, Victor, is an accomplished guitarist and composer, called a poly-stylist by Acoustic Guitar magazine. Kevin Carr of Folkworks said of the duo, “The interplay between Bruce (Victor)’s moving, deft yet muscular guitar playing and Marla’s always magic mandolin reminds me of watching two strong dancers moving together, creating so much more than the sum of the parts.”
Portland virtuoso mandolin player Connell will join Noctambule. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of music, Connell tours internationally with Mike Marshall’s Mandolin Orchestra. Regarded as the top North American interpreter of the Brazilian choro style, Connell’s playing has been called “fiery and energetic, soulful and evocative.”
