Seattle band Trombone Cake will glide across the Sound to Vashon on Saturday to perform at the Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.
The band performs at 9:30 p.m., and the cover is $5.
Influenced by artists from The Pixies and Talking Heads to Tom Waits and Velvet Underground, Trombone Cake plays magnetic and energetic indie rock that gets audiences jumping.
The group cuts its tracks live and usually with little, if any, rehearsal — but you’d never know it when you hear them perform.
In the studio, Mike Stone, Eric Richards, Erin McBride and Jeremy Lightfoot plug in, find the groove and lay down their boogie-muscle with a fury and force equal to that of a man-sized plate of Mexican food.
“I don’t mean to frighten you, but voodoo is alive and well and thriving in Seattle — and it goes by the name of Trombone Cake,” wrote Barbara Mitchell of The Stranger in July. “How else can you explain the urban-bayou-folk-rock-boogie-woogie madness cooked up by these crazy cats?
“These under-the-radar scene veterans have been slowly and steadily concocting an insanely rocking, funky, lethal brew’s worth of influences and inspirations,” she added. “Part head-ripping musical moonshine and part mind-tripping auditory absinthe.”
Opening for Trombone Cake is Grebes, an Island band fronted by Devin Sullivan (guitar/vocals) and backed up by Kevin Moe (drums/vocals) and Chris Hayward (bass/vocals). These three guys came together to form one of the most innovative bands in Island history, event organizers said.
“Grebes are one of the most creative songwriting bands that have a classic, yet fresh sound,” said Mike Marlatt of Trolls Cottage.
Arrive early to hear all of Grebes’ tracks.
The event is 21 and up, and IDs will be checked.
