An Island band takes the stage
Cargo Jam, a Vashon band, will play a free, all-ages show at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Red Bicycle Bistro.The band plays mostly original songs spanning the genres of blues, funk and jazz-flavored rock.
Come in costume to a concert
Publish the Quest, a band with a big fan base on Vashon, will play a Halloween party at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Bicycle Bistro. Costumes are encouraged. The band has been on a roll lately, recording music with Femi Kuti, Matt Chamberlain, Eyvind Kang, Radioactive, Vieux Farka Touré and Cape Verdean vocalist Laise Sanches. The band also performed in Zimbabwe in April and will set off to play in Poland in November. There’s a $10 cover charge for the band’s show at the Bike, which is for all ages until 11:30 p.m.
Church offers frightful delights
Vashon’s own variety show, The Church of Great Rain, will present its “Halloween Spooktacular” at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Open Space for Arts & Community. Organizers promise a show tricked out with chills, thrills and comedy. As always, there will be sketch comedy by the group’s Holly Roller Radio Players and music from the Church house band. Marshall Murray, who recently performed in Drama Dock’s “Rocky Horror Show,” will join the cast, and special musical guest Scott Huckabay will bring his guitar artistry to the stage. The show is rated PG-13, and tickets are $10 at Island book stores, www.brownpapertickets.com and at the door.
Author explores ‘normal people’
Local author Judi Blaze will have a book launch party for “Normal People Are Those We Don’t Know Well,” a collection of short stories released this month, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Café Luna. The book, Blaze’s first collection of short stories, chronicles the lives of quirky, often unhinged characters. Many of the stories have won awards or have been published in anthologies.
There’s a lot going on at Luna
The Stray Dogs, a bluegrass group led by Islander John Schubert, will play a free show at 7 p.m. Friday at Café Luna.
An open mic hosted by Richard Waits, David Ray and Joe Allison will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at the café.
Yakima author Inga Wiehl will read from her book, “Heartstrings: A Tale of Danish Loyalty, Resistance, and Homecoming,” at 4 p.m. Sunday at the café. Afterwards, she will sign books at Books by the Way.
A post-screening discussion of “The Greenhorns,” a documentary film about young farmers, will happen at 6 p.m. Sunday. The film is being presented at 4:30 p.m. at Vashon Theatre. And from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Halloween, Rebecca Douglas will take photographs of costumed trick-or-treaters.
