Scrape brings Bill Frisell
Scrape, a 16-piece string orchestra with harp, known for performing the music of composers Eyvind Kang and Jim Knapp, will be joined by Seattle jazz guitar star Bill Frisell for an upcoming show on Vashon. The concert, slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Open Space for Arts & Community, will feature Frisell’s orchestral compositions — a facet of his career for which he has received increasing acclaim in recent years.
Kang, a Vashon resident, is an internationally lauded composer and instrumentalist who won 2011’s prestigious Arts Innovator Award, given by the Seattle nonprofit Artist Trust.
Knapp, co-composer of Scrape and director of the Jim Knapp Orchestra, is a trumpet player, composer and teacher who has won wide acclaim as a composer, performer and recording artist. Tickets for the show, on sale now at www.brownpapertickets.com, are $20 general and $10 for students and seniors.
Last call for ‘Legally Blonde’
This is the last weekend to see Vashon High School’s lively production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.” The show — adapted from a novel and then a film starring Reese Witherspoon — took Broadway and London’s West End by storm just a few years ago. The show’s rights only recently became available for high school productions.
The show, considered PG and featuring a fantastic cast of Island teens, will have its final three performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday evening shows are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee takes place at 2 p.m. Tickets for the evening shows cost $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Matinee tickets are $12.
Experience the sounds of the Caribbean
Islanders can take a mental break from the chilly, rainy weather of late to enjoy some tropical sounds on Saturday at Vashon Library. At 2 p.m. the library will present Ian Dobson’s Seattle-based Pan Leggo, a highly interactive steel drum party, in a free show. All ages are welcome.
Enjoy the ‘Highlife’ at Bike
The Highlife Band, a seven-person band with a sound that combines reggae, jazz, Latin and Caribbean elements, will show off its skills to Vashon audiences for the first time at 9 p.m. on Saturday, at the Red Bicycle Bistro.
Concert promoter Pete Welch said he hopes that Islanders will welcome the band to the Island and “dance the night away.”
The show is free and for all ages until 11 p.m., and 21 and older after that.
