Islanders can celebrate the sights and sounds of a lively art scene by taking in the last gallery cruise of the summer from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at a multitude of Vashon art hotspots and shops. Some reception times may vary — check the listings below.

Blooms & Things will honor Sue Nebeker, the founder of American Hero Quilts, and display quilts from the project that will soon be on their way to troops in Afganistan and Fort Lewis. For six years, Nebeker has overseen the delivery of more than 7,000 quilts to wounded soliders and military families. Members of the Vashon Quilt Guild have been involved since the project’s inception.

Blue Heron Gallery will present “Women Concealed and Revealed” — new figurative works by sculptor Francie Allen and never-before-seen early works by painter Donald Cole. The two artists will discuss their art in a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception featuring music by Jack Barbash, Steve Meyer and Geoff Johns. Allen, who lived on Vashon from 1982 to 1998, recently returned to the Northwest to live in Bellingham after years of studying and teaching in California. She uses mixed media, paper pulp, wire and acrylic gel paint to sculpt human bodies in motion. Cole and artist wife Joan Wortis moved to Vashon in the early 1990s from New York City. Cole is currently represented by Seattle’s ArtXchange Gallery.

Books by the Way will exhibit works created in two recent teen glass camps led by Brian Brenno.

Café Luna will present “From Dusk to Dawn,” an exhibit of Kirk Beeler’s landscape photographs of the Pacific Northwest. Beeler has lived on Vashon for 22 years and also spends considerable time exploring, fly-fishing and photographing east of the Cascades.

Duet will present “Water and Women,” oil paintings by local artist Shawn Hair.

Giraffe will showcase wooden bowls made from fallen Acacia trees in Kenya.

Good Merchandise will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. to show off wares by 90 artists.

The Hardware Store Restaurant will feature Island artist Marilyn Blitz, who will exhibit “Vashon Wide Angles,” a new group of large, multi-paneled paintings. “Increasingly, I have a sense of the Island as my peaceful home, one that I treasure for its natural vegetation and sparsely populated spaces,” Blitz said. “Revisiting these places and painting these canvases was the best part of my winter.” The reception will start at 5:30 p.m.

Heron’s Nest will show paintings by Jon Rader Jarvis and Hita von Mende.

Red Bicycle Bistro will exhibit work by Island photographers Sean Harken and Colin Brynn.

Treasure Island will exhibit “Flourish” — hand-painted furniture and mirrors by Fran Mechura and Karson Brown.

Two Wall Gallery will will be the scene of “Animal, Vegatable, Mineral,” a contest and exhibit of photographs organized by Vashon Island Growers Association. All of the photographs in the show were taken in July at the Vashon Farmers Market, Island farms or farm stands. Friday’s reception, from 7 to 9 p.m., will feature food grown on local farms. Harve Bergman, contest judge, will announce the winning photographers in the three categories listed in the show’s title. The public will also be able to vote on their favorite image.

VALISE Gallery will present “Words in Art,” an exhibit including work by VALISE gallery artist Gay Schy and guest artists Francesca Fuller and Joan Wortis. Each of the artists will show a body of work in which words and letters — not always recognizable as such —are part of the pieces.

Vashon Bookshop will show colonial baskets by Barbara Gustafson, and at 7 p.m., John Dally, bagpiper, will perform with singer/songwriter Kat Eggleston and fiddler/step-dancer Sue Truman.

Vashon Community Care is displaying paintings by Island watercolorist Jeanne Snell, who will be on hand for a gallery cruise reception. Snell’s paintings include flowers, landscapes and portraits.

Vashon Intuitive Arts will display the work of Anne Gordon in a show dubbed “An Intuitive Artist with Eclectic Views of Vashon and Far Beyond.” A music performance by Hejira, a world music duo that combines ancient and classical world musical styles, global rhythms and exotic scales with modern instrumentation, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m.

Vashon Senior Center, located on Bank Road, will show photographs of Ghana by 11-year-old Sophie Gagnaire, who recently returned to the Island after living in Ghana for the past year.

Windermere Realty will host a show of new jewelry from India by Zavida Gemstones, a Vashon-based business. Zavida gives 25 percent of its profits back to the regions and artists where its pieces originate.
