Islanders can combine a night of caroling, schmoozing, art cruising and holiday shopping this Friday evening, when almost every shop and gallery in town will be open.
The gallery cruise will take place from 6 to 9 p.m., overlapping with Vashon’s annual tree-lighting and Holiday Open House (see story, page 11).
Highlights of the gallery cruise include the following shows and receptions.
Good things come in small packages at Blue Heron Gallery
Blue Heron Gallery will present its fourth annual “Masters in Miniature” exhibition, featuring works by almost 50 Island artists. The works in the show, which measure no larger than seven inches by seven inches, will include painting, pottery, wood, glass, tile, sculpture, printmaking, fiber, photography and mixed media. The show is co-curated by Janice Mallman and Carol Schwennesen.
According to Schwennesen, the show is full of wonderful artworks.
“These tiny pieces often have an iconic feel about them, like small treasures you can carry in your pocket,” she said.
Island musicians Jack Barbash, Steve Meyer and Fletcher Andrews will be on hand to play at the opening reception.
Museum hangs ‘A String of Aprons’
Visions of holiday meals past — and the men and women who prepared them — might spring to mind for viewers of Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum’s new exhibit, “A String of Aprons.”
The exhibit will be a homespun affair, spotlighting aprons that have been loaned to the exhibit by Islanders. The written stories behind the aprons will also be a part of the show, letting viewers in on some of the most precious memories of those who shared aprons with the exhibit organizers.
There will also be a slide show of even more Island aprons, photographed by Vashon photographer Robert Teagardin.
Get a preview of the art studio tour
Several art studios will get a head start on the 2010 Holiday Art Studio Tour by opening up their workspaces on Friday.
The artists of Waterworks Studio, located at 7012 S.W. 240th St, on Maury Island, will have a preview party starting at 6 p.m. For directions, call 463-5633.
Waterworks’ artists include painters Mike Maher, Darsie Beck, Bob Horsley and Stephanie Harlan; photographers Ray Pfortner and Chris Beck; potter Heidi Richards; printmaker Nancy Wing; paper and banner artist Lindsay Aickin; jewelers Ginny Ciszek and Kate Rutherford; textile artists Dana Illo, Jordan Beck and Susan Bates and soap and broom maker Vicki Browne. The collective also includes the Lavender Sisters.
The Hardware Store Restaruant will be the site of Pam Ingall’s oil painting show, and guitarist Daryl Redeker will be on hand to serenade viewers from 7 to 9 p.m.
Dova Silks will show off new works created for the tour, as well as woven and crocheted jewelry by Nicky Falkenhayn.
And in a space adjoining Dova Silks, a group of artists that go by the name of Studio 5 will also host a show of new work that includes Marek Little’s fur fedoras.
Further from town, Roobiblue Studios will be open at 9807 S.W. 216th St.
