Fundraiser brings renowned musicians to town

Let’s just say this is a big deal. Grammy-award winning guitarist Bill Frisell and acclaimed composer and violist Eyvind Kang are coming to Vashon to play a benefit concert for Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Vashon Theatre.

Frisell, who has collaborated with such musical luminaries as Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, Charlie Hayden and Ornette Coleman to name but a few, and Eyvind Kang, who hangs out with the likes of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson, are two major players in the national music scene. So why Vashon and why donate their fee? Because islander Mike Dumovich, an old friend of Frisell’s, asked for a favor, and the musicians agreed.

“We’re old friends through music,” Dumovich said. “I’ve wanted to do a concert with Frisell for a long time.”

But Dumovich didn’t have just any concert in mind. His vision was for a concert with a mission, a mission to help others. Those others include VYFS and the clients it serves. Dumovich, who grew up on the island, said he owes a lot to VYFS. When he hit a rough patch earlier in his life, Dumovich turned to VYFS, and the agency helped him through it.

“I really respect what they did for me,” Dumovich said, “so I want to do whatever I can do to help them and the people who need their services. They assist between 1,500 to 1,600 people on the island, mostly those who don’t have money but need help, a lot of old-school islanders.”

Other island organizations are also kicking in to support the fundraiser. Vashon Theatre and Green Tech are discounting the price of venue, Vashon Allied Arts and Vashon Events worked on marketing the show, the Eagles are a major financial contributor, and Snapdragon, Mays Kitchen and Vashon Distillery have helped out as well.

As for the music, Dumovich said Frisell plays more than just jazz and “when you look at who he’s played with, his resume is, well, ridiculous.”

The New Yorker said Frisell plays guitar like Miles Davis played trumpet. But Frisell’s own compositions run the gamut of influences from Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk to Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Frank Zappa. He’s recorded multiple albums that include folk, blues and jazz standards and has composed musical scores for movies, including two for Gus Van Sant.

Local chanteur and guitarist Michael Whitmore will open the show for Frisell and Yang.

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $10 for seniors and children under 18 and are available at brownpapertickets.com/event/1321464, Vashon Bookshop and at the theater box office. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
