Renaissance tunes come alive
The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “A Broken Consort,” the second of five Vashon concerts in 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Vashon United Methodist Church.
In “A Broken Consort,” the seldom heard flutes, violin and lute of the Renaissance will be heard in the popular chamber music of the 16th and early 17th centuries, to recast the songs of love and other poetic sentiments of the day.
Garth Reeves visits the Bike
Seattle musician Garth Reeves will play at the Red Bicycle at 9 p.m. Saturday.
Reeves has been deeply involved in the Seattle music scene, taking part in several bands over the past 18 years. Now as a solo artist and in collaboration with others, Reeves is expanding on a catalog of solo work that mines the roots of the American musical vernacular.
Pete Welch, who books the Bike’s performances, called Reeves’ most recent album “a stunning and emotional record deeply rooted in tradition.”
The free show is for all ages until 11 p.m and 21 and older after that.
Find a treasure at a trunk show
This Valentine’s Day give a gift from Vashon-based Zavida Gemstones, which will offer a one-day trunk show from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Blue Heron gallery.
Offering handmade jewelry from around the world, Zavida’s philosophy evolved when business partners Lee Gelb and Shelley Milano decided they wanted to do something creative and philanthropic with their corporate backgrounds. They now work with an arts organization in India that helps jewelry artisans sell their wares, and they give 25 percent of their profits to the project. Let your talent shine
Drama Dock is holding auditions for two upcoming shows. Auditions for “Sherlock’s Veiled Secret,” which were scheduled during the recent storm, will be help again at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Ober Park Performance Space. Performers should prepare two short memorized monologues, one comic and one serious.
Auditions for Drama Dock’s summer production of the light opera “Pirates of Penzance” will be help from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, and 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Performers should be ready to sing a simple song. A pianist will be available for accompaniment.

A Scot brings his music and wit
Jim Malcolm, considered by some to be one of Scotland’s finest performers, will visit Vashon for an intimate concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.
Malcolm has traveled the world with his guitar, harmonicas and engaging wit, as he sings the traditional songs of Scotland.
