First Friday in October: local art exhibits beckon

VALISE Gallery and The Hardware Store Restaurant beckon art lovers near and far.

VALISE Gallery

In October, VALISE Artist Collective and Gallery is presenting the landscape paintings of Jiji Saunders and George Wright.

Saunders’ images depict a warm wind scooping up the edge of a tent, a cerulean river winding its way from the horizon, and summer trees imitating river sounds as the day heats up.

“These are lazy rivers on baking hot days,” Saunders said. “They are the rivers of childhood summers.”

George Wright’s encaustic paintings are abstract representations of landscapes.

“For my part in this show, I have used local bees to do all the work and I just add color,” she said, describing the exhibit as a storybook filled with several acres of woods, grass, and water.

Gallery-goers, she said, can “share a marshmallow or a bee’s knees.”

In October, VALISE Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m.

A reception will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. The exhibit runs through Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Hardware Store Restaurant

“From the City to the Island, an exhibition of collages by John Schuh, is on display during the month of October at The Hardware Store Restaurant Gallery.

The show includes recent collages inspired by Vashon scenes such as Raab’s Lagoon and the Engels Car Show, along with earlier work focused on the architecture of Seattle.
