Open Space for Arts & Community
Open Space artists-in-residence Allison Crain Trundle and Brooke Gassiot will debut “Hyphae and Us,” a newly created abstract art installation, in a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and in an artists’ talk about the work at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at Open Space.
The installation, about human growth and hyphae (the fine, branching tubes that make up the body, or mycelium, of a multicellular fungus), explores the interconnectedness between nature and humanity. The exhibit is made up of natural materials, recyclables, bioplastics, fabric, video, sound and film work. As part of their residency, the artists have interviewed islanders and will include their stories about growth and interconnectivity in the installation.
Outstanding In Its Field
An annual event, “The Dog & Cat Days of Summer,” will return to the Outstanding In Its Field Gallery, and run Aug. 4-27.
The show includes garden art, oil painting, sculpture, linocut prints, felted works, leather collars, mosaics, and pastels. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Vashon Island Pet Protectors. The Gallery is located at 10524 S.W. 188th St, and is open from 12-5 p.m. Fridays-Sundays, and on weekdays by appointment, which can be made by calling 206-419.0199.
The exhibit includes oil paintings from Margaret Tylczak and Teresa McFall; whimsical sculptures by Morgan Brig; linocut prints from Lynn McClain; soft pastels by Janeen Bramwell; collage sculpture by Sheila Eckman; felted creations by Yulia Ivashchenko; leather collars from Julia and William Cleaver; and garden art, bas-relief bronze sculpture, and etched glass works from White Hart Art.
The First Friday celebration, from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 4, will include baked goods and a performance by Kat Eggleston in the gallery’s party pasture. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets or camp chairs.
Vashon Heritage Museum
The Vashon Heritage Museum will host a second reception for its special mini-exhibit “The Fourth of July Hydroplanes: Circling Vashon since 1955,” during the First Friday Gallery Cruise on the evening of Aug. 4.
The exhibit, which opened in July and will run through November, was curated by Brian Brenno and the museum’s special exhibits committee and includes a home-built hydroplane and interpretive displays.
At the museum, islanders can also view “Natural Wonder: An Island Shaped by Water,” an exhibit created in partnership with the Vashon Nature Center, that examines Vashon-Maury Island’s natural history.
Both exhibits can be viewed during regular museum hours, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
Vashon Senior Center
Thirteen members of the Photo Club at Vashon Senior Center are continuing a group show with some new images during August. Photographers represented in this show are Mike Dillmann, Linda Fox, Bob Hallowell, Dennis Hess, Eliza Hitchcock, Lorra Hoffman, Charlotte Lubbert, Peter Milovsoroff, Keith Prior, Karlista Rickerson, Richard Rogers, Jeff Twersky, and Wade Yip.
Come meet the photographers and see a slideshow of their photos from 1-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at the Senior Center. A reception for the artists will take place the same day, from 5-7 p.m.
Visit vashoncenter.org or call 206-463-5173 for hours and more information about the show. Partial proceeds of sales will benefit the Senior Center.
VALISE Gallery
In August, VALISE Gallery will present three artists in “Over Under Sideways Down,” a show that moves in many directions with several styles, all celebrating vibrant and energetic colors.
Along with his signature zany and whimsical abstract paintings, Bill Jarcho will share a number of what he calls, “Odd twisty doodles” — cut-out 3-D assemblages dancing with color and vitality.
“They’re part of an ongoing, life-long process of expressing my animated, off-the-wall sensibility through hand-made, low-fi art,” he said.
Robert Passig’s rich and detailed large oil paintings have two subject areas.
“Both human and material detritus has been a predominant theme in my paintings for some time,” he said. “Secondly, a series of sensual male nudes are part of a personal challenge to work with subject matter that I had previously evaded.”
Gregory Burnham is interested in language-based art. His mixed media work is humorous, ironic and off-beat.
“I like to see what I read and read what I see,” Burnham said.
The opening reception for the show will take place from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, with a preview taking place earlier that day, at 1 p.m. VALISE is open from 1-6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Vashon Center for the Arts
If you haven’t yet seen VCA’s Summer Arts Fest’s second round of art collections, be sure to stop by on First Friday, from 5-8 p.m. This is the last weekend for this series of exhibitions that includes prints, small and large-scale metal works, and paintings.
New to the gallery gift shop this week is Zuzko Jewelry, by Zuzana Korbelarova. This handcrafted sterling silver and gold jewelry is designed and fabricated from beginning to end by a small family team.
Regular gallery hours are 12-5 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday. The gallery is also open during Kay White Hall events.
