Vashon Film Society (VFS) will welcome cinephiles back to Vashon Theatre with two lively season opening events. Admission to both events is by donation at the door.

Bollywood Night

Bollywood Night, co-sponsored by VFS and All India Café, will take place at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the theater.

Bollywood is the informal term for the Hindi language film industry in India, one of the largest film producing countries in the world.

“As soon as All India Café opened last spring, we wanted to collaborate with them, so this is the perfect way to launch our fall season,” said VFS president Leslie McMichael. “Dancing in the aisles during the movie will not only be tolerated, it will be encouraged.”

The event will feature clips from colorful films, authentic Indian cuisine and a drawing for a gift certificate to the All India Café. Filmgoers in Indian-themed costume will be eligible for a special prize drawing.

Burning Man

The second event will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, when VFS and film curator Peter Ray present Damon Brown’s documentary film “Burning Man — Beyond Black Rock.”

Burning Man is a yearly art and community event in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada that culminates in the burning of a giant wooden effigy. A growing number of Islanders make the trek to Nevada each year to participate in the event.

Ray, who described Burning Man as a “total immersion event,” said he felt Brown’s film “comes the closest to giving the viewer the full picture of Burning Man.”

Vashon Film Society works to promote on-Island moviegoing, maintain Vashon Theatre as a vital community resource and provide support for young people interested in studying cinema.
