Island teens will sing, dance and act up a storm in “Fame, the Musical,” opening March 13 and running through March 29 at Vashon High School theater.

The musical, which follows a set of vibrant and multicultural young performers during their time at New York High School for the Performing Arts, was created by David De Silva as a follow-up to his hugely successful film and television versions of “Fame.”

Audience members who have seen the film and television versions should know that the musical has an almost entirely different score from the other adaptations.

The musical premiered in Florida in 1988, and since that time it has been presented in countless amateur and professional venues.

Most recently, in 2008, the musical opened in Paris at the Teatre Comedia to great acclaim.

Vashon’s production will feature an enthusiastic and multi-talented cast of local teens.

Calen Winn, Lea Zaglin, Nolan Shinn and Anna Smith play teachers at the school, whose responsibility it is to make sure their students know that stardom never comes easily and without hard work.

The principal cast of show business wannabes includes David Katz, Callison Ott, Kelly Ferguson, Brendon Bric, Nell Horsley, Jack Lorence, Riley Hills, Emma Lodes, Tynan Lazarus and Meme Garcia.

This group will take on characters including Mabel, a dancer who battles her weight; José, who dreams of becoming the next Freddy Prinz; Iris, a dancer who pretends to be rich when her chauffeur father drops her off at school, and Tyrone, a dancer who hides an invisible disability.

Other meaty roles in the musical include Schlomo, who lives in the shadow of his concert violinist father, and Carmen, whose pursuit of fame gets in the way of her achievement as an artist.

In all, 24 students will perform in the musical, which will be presented on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 29.

Producers described the show as “fast paced, dramatic, funny and moving,” but warned that because of some intense language and scenes, the musical might not be a good fit for children younger than 13.

Susan Hanson and Stephen Floyd produced and directed the show. Choreography is by Geoff Reiman, a Vashon High School (VHS) graduate who also choreographed the VHS production of “Chicago.”

Additional choreography is by Sarah Mercer, a professional dancer and also a VHS grad.

Musical direction is by Maggie Laird. Scenic design is by Craig Hanson.
