Extra, extra, sing all about it: ‘Newsies, Jr.’ hits the stage

It’s a story of a group of underdogs uniting to fight for their rights.

VCA’s Teen Musical Theatre Program will present Disney’s “Newsies, Jr.” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.

Over the past 11 weeks, a cast of 43 students, four directors, and three musicians have banded together to bring their community this inspirational story of a group of underdogs uniting to fight for their rights.

The one-hour musical is based on a true story, inspired by Newsboys Strike of 1899, in New York City, when newsboys Kid Blink and David Simons led a ragtag band of orphan and runaway children on a two-week-long action against newspaper publishers Pulitzer and Hearst. Hundreds of boys and girls who sold newspapers on the streets of New York marched onto the Brooklyn Bridge and other places around the city, putting a halt to traffic and other businesses.

With a rousing Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein, this uplifting, timeless story of grit, resilience, and fighting the good fight is just what our community needs right now. So take the kids — or simply join others in the audience — to support Vashon’s latest crop of youth thespians, while at the same time, being reminded that change is possible.

The show’s 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday is sensory-friendly. Find out more and get tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
