Vashon Allied Arts will present an evening of radio drama at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron.

The production, “Vashon Noir,” will feature a new group calling itself Vashon Radio Theatre, premiering radio plays penned by Islander Marc Powell, who is the pastor of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Powell, who moonlights as an actor and writer, has been involved in several recent theater productions on the Island.

“I decided to do a radio play to embrace its unique challenge — engaging listeners with only sound and their own imaginations,” Powell said. “I also have always adored old-time radio dramas like ‘The Shadow’ and ‘Imagination Theatre’ and ‘Inner Sanctum,’ and I recently discovered that it can be replicated fairly inexpensively with technology.”

Two of the plays in Saturday’s program  — “Taskmasters” and “Old Flames” — are adaptations of short stories written by award-winning California novelist Simon Wood, who will attend the show on Saturday and answer questions from the audience.

“Vashon Noir” will also includes the play “350 Pounds,” an environmental tale adapted by Powell from a short story written by Marybeth Holleman.

Besides Powell, the show’s cast includes Kirk Beeler, Kat Eggleston, Peter Kreitner, Andy Krikawa, Mary-Fran Lyons, Susan McCabe, Gordon Millar, Steve Tosterud and Michael Whitmore.
