VFS shows Academy Award nominee: The Vashon Film Society (VFS) will show “Rocks in My Pockets,” a fantastical animated work described as “a funny film about depression,” at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Theatre. The film was selected as the Latvian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards and has been shown at film festivals worldwide.
Vashon youth opens for Seattle musician: This Friday at the Red Bike, singer and songwriter Maijah Sanson-Frey, 15, will open for Seattle musician Garth Reeves and his band: The Unfaithful Servants, comprised of Jeff Fielder, Andy Stoller and Mike Musburger. The free cover show is open to all ages until 11 p.m., then 21 and older only.
Iconic cover songs performed as a tribute: The songs of Simon & Garfunkel will be performed by an ensemble of Vashon musicians in a show called Like a Bridge at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist Church. A second show will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Seattle’s Town Hall. Participating musicians and vocalists include Kat Eggleston, Kim Thal, Steve Amsden, Rebekah Kuzma, Kate Atwell, Mary Tuel, Steve Meyer, Christine Goering, Christopher Overstreet and Cade Roggenbuck. A statement from Vashon Allied Arts said, “This will be the first time that a show produced by VAA will travel to a venue off-island, and will metaphorically bridge the waters between Vashon and Seattle, showcasing our island’s wonderful musical talents.” Tickets to both performances are available at vashonalliedarts.org.
Burlesco Notturno returns to Open Space: Burlesco Notturno Noir returns under cover of darkness to the Open Space for Arts & Community at 8 p.m. Saturday, with doors opening at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is what lives in darkened shadows — where “detectives like Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade and even Guy Noir wrestle with the temptations of the world, and where the femme fatales lure them in.” Madame X and her minion lawyer will host the evening. A select number of VIP tables are available for groups of four or eight, with food from La Biondo and wine from The Hardware Store Restaurant. The reserved seats are in the front, and the Burlesco performers will visit the VIP tables. VIP tables are only available online at brownpapertickets.com. General admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Vashon Bookshop and brownpapertickets.com.
