One-act plays by local priest open
Two one-act plays, “The Cure: A Tale” and “Uncommon Clay,” starring a cast of Island actors, are the latest installment in Vashon Allied Arts New Works Series and will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, at Blue Heron Art Center.
The plays, written by Rev. Marc Powell, the parish priest at St. John Vianney Church, are adaptations of stories by best-selling author Susan Vreeland.
“The Cure: A Tale” is the comedic story of two rustic Tuscan villagers (portrayed by Vashon Opera star Andy Krikawa and local actor Gordon Millar) who set out on a journey to see the world’s greatest works of art. “Uncommon Clay” explores the world of a potter (Roxanne Lyons) who must care for her mother (Patricia Kelly), who has Alzheimer’s Disease. Jason Lollar plays at the Bike
One More Mile, a band featuring local guitar god Jason Lollar, drummer Sam Veatch, bassist David Salonen, harmonica player Mike Nichols and guitarist Tom Bean, will play a show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, at Red Bicycle Bistro. The free show is for all ages until 11 p.m., and 21 and older after that.
Lollar designs and produces arch top, solid-body electric and lap steel guitars and is also a noted authority on everything related to electric pickups. He has played with numerous bands through the years. The other musicians are well known to Vashon music lovers for their participation in numerous bands and music projects.
Open mic returns to Café Luna
The tradition of an open mic night will return to Café Luna at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 26, when hosts Richard Waits and Joe Allison welcome musicians, singers, poets and other performers to the café’s stage. The evening will conclude with an impromptu jam session. Sign-up begins at 7 p.m.
The Diggers will play at Blue Heron
The Diggers, a much-loved local band, will perform as part of Vashon Allied Arts New Works Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Blue Heron Art Center. (Not April 12, as previously noted in the Beachcomber).
The band includes Camille Coldeen on accordion, guitar and vocals, Danny Salonen on drums, David Salonen on fiddle and bass and Nick Simmons on banjo. For their Blue Heron show, the talented locals will sing mostly original tunes and a few obscure covers, including a Cab Calloway jazz number.

Vashon Island Chorale will sing
Vashon Island Chorale’s spring concert, a presentation of Brahm’s Requiem, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Bethel Church. Soloists will be Vashon Opera’s Jennifer and Andrew Krikawa. The concert will also feature pianists Linda Lee and Evan Stults.
