Garth Reeves plays a show
The Garth Reeves Band will play an all-ages, free show at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Red Bicycle Bistro. Reeves has played professionally for more than 18 years, appearing in bands such as Dangermouse, Nubbin, Goodness and Blue Spark. He has collaborated both on stage and in recording studios with notable island musicians, including Jason Staczek, Ian Moore and Pete Droge. His 2005 album, “Nothing But Time,” was made using analog tape, an old Trident board and a tight-knit group of Vashon and Seattle players. His work, he said, is rooted in emotion and tradition, “mining the roots of American musical vernacular.”
Spice up your Wednesday
The Accordion Babes, a six-woman ensemble, will play a lively show of Americana, blues, world and circus music tonight at 7 p.m. at the Vashon Cohousing common house. Admission to the show is $5 to $15, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information, visit www.circusfinelli.com.
“True Reverse,” a dance improvisation piece, will be presented tonight at 7 p.m. at Hanna Barn Studio, 7712 S.W. Point Robinson Rd. Vashon dancers Joan Hanna and Karen Nelson will be joined by international artists Lily Kiara, Ray Chung, Katarina Ericksson, Nora Hajos and Mary Ganzon in the performance. There is a suggested donation of $10 to $20; no one will be turned away, though.
A Good Friday cantata
The cantata, “Stabat Mater,” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday at Vashon Lutheran Church. The piece, a Good Friday meditation in honor of the Virgin Mary, is the best-known sacred work by Italian composer, violinist and organist Giovanni Pergolesi, who lived from 1710 to 1736. The cantanta will be presented by soprano Marita Ericksen, tenor Joe Farmer and Evan Stults, known locally for his performance on piano with Vashon Opera and the Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra. A free will offering will be taken to aid the music ministry at Vashon Lutheran Church.
Chamber orchestra gets ready for a spring concert
The Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra is gearing up for its spring concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, and 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Vashon Methodist Church. The evening concert is for general audiences; the one on Saturday morning is an abbreviated version aimed at young kids and families. Works by Vivaldi, Biber and Dvorak will be performed, and island soprano Holly Boaz will join the group to perform an intense Vivaldi work composed in the 1720s.
Tickets to the concert are $12 general and $10 for students and seniors on Friday and by donation on Saturday.
Last chance to view fiber art exhibit
Don’t miss an impressive exhibit of fiber art, mixed media and more from local artist Nancy Sipple and a collection of her friends, running for a few more days at the Hardware Store Restaurant.
Sipple, an accomplished artist in a wide range of fiber media, is exhibiting her embroidery, children’s couture clothing, quilting, fabric painting, a concrete wall casting and works that combine sterling silver, wood and fabric. Friends joining her for the exhibit include Judy Dohm (applique quilting), Jo-Anne Kirby (fabric sculpting), Anne Rindge (applique quilting), Miyoko Matsuda (applique/sashiko quilting), Susie Jones (applique quilting), Lisa Bird (applique quilting) and Edie Ulatowski (Icelandic knitting). The exhibit will be on display until April 3, though display cases with Sipple’s silver pieces will be removed on March 30.
