Wine and dancing spice up Luna 

There will be a wine tasting, hosted by Vashon Winery’s Ron Irvine, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Café Luna. Irvine offers four wines for $10.

The next night, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 9, there will be a free evening of salsa dancing at the café, hosted by Assia Hamani. The evening will start with 30 minutes of instructions, and then participants are free to dance the night away.

Weird music at the Bike

Weird Load, an Island band made up of a mix of rock musicians who have played together in other groups, will play a free show at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Red Bicycle Bistro. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and older after that. 

The band’s front man is Chris Craggs, who will be joined on the Bike’s stage by bassist Bret L. Harper, drummer Brett Bacchus and multi-instrumentalist Loren Sinner. Trumpet player John Hansen will do a guest star turn as the band plays original tunes and classic and obscure covers. 

Subconscious Population plays 

Subconscious Population, Vashon’s beloved rock, funk, boogie and reggae band, will play a concert from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at The BookArts Building (the former VFW Hall), located at 22100 Vashon Highway S.W. Band members include Ron Hook, Steve Brix, Richard Lipke and Indigo Hook.

The concert is part of “Focus on the Music,” a series of shows produced by Rez 1 Productions on the second Saturday evening of every month. The goal is to spotlight local musicians in a venue where the audience can focus on the performance and not be distracted by a club or bar scene. Admission is $5 at the door.  

UMO jumps the pond 

Vashon’s UMO Ensemble will perform its show, “Red Tiger Tales,” at Seattle’s ACT Theatre from April 14 to 23. The family friendly show includes UMO’s trademark mask, puppetry, music and physical theater work. ‘Enchanted April’ is on the way 

Drama Dock is gearing up to present “Enchanted April,” a Tony-nominated play set in an Italian castle in the 1920s.

The play, which centers around four women on a month-long holiday, was adapted for the stage by Michael Barber and based on a 1922 novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim and a 1992 film that was nominated for several Golden Globe and Academy Awards.

Adam Brock directs Drama Dock’s 10-member cast, which includes Libbie Anthony, Gaye Detzer, Phil Dunn, Earthsong, Jordie and Roman Marquez-Twisdale, Frank Petree, Zoey Rice, Michael Shook and March Twisdale.  

Brock called the cast “lovely, vibrant and creative” and said he hoped Island audiences “feel transported” by the show. 

“Enchanted April” will be performed April 15 to 17 and April 22 to 24 at Vashon High School. Tickets are on sale now at Vashon Bookshop and Books by the Way.
