Dockton artists host a Labor Day weekend art walk

Look for a wide variety of art, including paintings, drawings and prints, jewelry, and much more.

For a tiny community tucked away on the shores of Quartermaster Harbor, Dockton boasts an unusual number of artists. Recently, people working in a variety of media banded together to form Dockton Artists, a very local collective, and subsequently decided to organize a public art walk for Labor Day weekend.

Gale Lurie of Dockton Pottery explained: “We’d been saying for some time that we have so many artists working here, so we should really do something. The art walk is the result.”

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, a total of 15 artists will show off their work in seven studios. The impressive concentration of talent in such a small area is reflected in the fact that all the studios are within walking distance of each other.

The studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Lurie noted that “on Sunday, the famous Aeggy’s food cart will be available, so bring your appetite.”

On show will be a wide variety of art, including paintings (oils, pastels, acrylics, and watercolors), drawings and prints, jewelry, neon art, photography, pottery, and stained glass, as well as felted clothing, shoes, and hats. Some of the artists in the group, including Lurie, have been working in Dockton for many years; others, such as Alleson Buchanan — a neon artist — are new to the area.

Lurie suggests people coming for the art walk take the opportunity to explore the area beyond the studios. “While you’re here, walk the historic Dockton Trail,” she said. “Visit the playground and the beach by the marina. Or take a walk in the lovely Dockton forest. Make a day of it.”

Details of the Dockton Art Walk, including a map of the studios, can be found at docktonartists.com. Additional information on participating artists, with examples of their work, is on the Dockton Artists’ Facebook page.

Correction: Previous versions of this article said that Aeggy’s food cart will be at the Dockton art walk on Saturday, Aug. 31, which is not the case. It will be there on Sunday, Sept. 1.
