A staple of summer arts entertainment — free outdoor presentations of classic theater works — will happen in two scenic Island locations this weekend.

Vashon Park District’s production of the French verse play, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, July 22 to 25, at Ober Park.

Paul Shapiro, who founded the Park District’s theater-in-the-park series in 2007, will star as Cyrano, a swashbuckling duelist, poet and musician who also happens to have an unfortunate facial flaw — a very big nose.

Islander Lisa Breen will play Cyrano’s love interest, and other members of the cast of 14 include many well-known Island actors.

Charlotte Tiencken, who is currently the managing director of Book-It Repertory Theatre in Seattle, is the show’s director.

Lavish costumes for the period piece, which was written in the 19th century and is set in the 17th century, were created by Patricia Toovey, who works as a costumer to UMO Ensemble. The production also boasts original music by Luke McQuillin and live accompaniment from the Vashon Pipe Band.

Another free show will take place at Point Robinson Park on Saturday only.

The Young Shakespeare Workshop, a Seattle group directed by Islander Darren Lay, will celebrate 10 years of bringing Shakespeare to Vashon with a free performance of “King Richard the Second,” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday July 24, at Point Robinson Park.

The production’s cast includes Island teen Rob O’Brien in the role of Isabel, Richard’s young queen.

Lay described the drama as one of “Shakespeare’s most lyrical and haunting early plays.”
