Two free concerts coming up in Ober Park will feature the exciting rhythms of Brazilian music. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto will take the stage for “Brazilian Accordions & More,” a concert sponsored by Vashon Park District and Vashon Folk Dancers and curated by Martin Koenig. Neto will be joined by fellow accordion player Ben Gown and percussionist Jeff Busch.

Auditions are coming up

Auditions for a new play, “Atticus,” adapted by Marc Powell from the novel by Ron Hansen, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 and 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Blue Heron. Male adult actors are needed. Prepare one short monologue. Scenes from the script will be provided. For a copy of the script or information, call Powell at 225-8058.  

Brazil comes to Vashon

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto will take the stage for “Brazilian Accordions & More,” a concert sponsored by Vashon Park District and Vashon Folk Dancers and curated by Martin Koenig. Neto will be joined by fellow accordion player Ben Gown and percussionist Jeff Busch. 

Neto is a master pianist, composer and arranger. Currently, he leads the Seattle-based ensemble Quinteto and teaches at Cornish College of the Arts. He is also in demand as a piano soloist, working with orchestras, jazz, big bands, chamber music groups and in collaboration with a host of well-known musicians. 

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, Eduardo Mendonça, a renowned guitarist/vocalist and founder of the music and dance ensemble Show Brazil will share the Ober Park stage with a band and Los Angeles-based Copacabana Samba Show founder/member/dancer Claudia Castello. Bring your dancing shoes.

Heavenly sounds at Ober 

Bring a picnic lunch to Ober Park at noon Wednesday, Aug. 10, when Vashon Park District will host a free harp concert performed by the Vashon Island Harp Camp ensemble. The 10-harp ensemble, directed by Islander Leslie McMichael, will pluck music ranging from classical songs to a medley of movie theme tunes.   

Lots of music fills the Bike 

The Winterlings will perform a free, all-ages show at Red Bicycle Bistro at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5. Amanda Birdsall and Wolff Bowden comprise the duo, and they are are known for poetic lyrics accompanied by gentle guitar, haunting harmonies and plaintive violin. Their show blends music, painting and poetry.  

Another free, all-ages show, this time featuring The Sour Mash Hug Band, will take place at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The band plays old-time music. Expect everything from Romanian couple dances to Appalachian hymns to klezmer and Harlem swing.

A guitar concert at Luna

Damon Buxton will return to Café Luna at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, to play a fingerstyle, solo guitar concert. Buxton’s 2007 CD was produced by Will Ackerman, founder of Windham Hill Records. His latest CD, “Rotation of Earth,” is available at DamonBuxton.com, iTunes and Amazon.com.
