Matt Anderson at VCA
Canadian triple-threat singer/songwriter and musician Matt Anderson will offer up raw blues, rollicking Americana, thoughtful folk, and ecstatic gospel in a concert held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Vashon Center for the Arts.
Andersen’s powerhouse stage presence is informed by decades of cutting his teeth in dusty clubs, dim-lit bars, and grand theatres all over the world, delivering soulful performances that run the gamut from intimate to wall-shaking.
In the studio, he’s created recordings that have led him to amass more than 23 million streams on Spotify and 26 million views on YouTube.
In addition to headlining major festivals, clubs and theatres throughout North America, Europe and Australia, he has shared the stage and toured with legendary figures including Marcus King, Beth Hart, Marty Stuart, Greg Allman, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Bachman, and others.
Andersen nabbed the 2013 and 2016 European Blues Awards for best solo/acoustic Act, and was the first-ever Canadian to take home top honors in the solo category at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. He’s also won multiple Maple Blues Awards, given to outstanding Canadian performances in the field of blues.
Adam Baldwin, another Canadian singer/songwriter, will be the opening artist for Matt Andersen on Nov 2.
Baldwin has been a mainstay of the Atlantic Canada music scene for more than a decade. With his sophomore full-length album “Concertos & Serenades,” Baldwin – born and raised in Nova Scotia – offers an East Coast testimony that is filled with soul.

Bruce Phares’ Birthday Jam
Back by popular demand, Bruce Phares’ Birthday Jam will return to the Kay White Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at VCA. Featured musical guests include Marc Seales on piano and John Bishop on drums. Islanders who have followed Phares’ ongoing Jam in the Atrium jazz series in VCA’s atrium on Saturday afternoons won’t want to miss this culmination of the season.
Since landing on the island just a few years ago at the beginning of 2020, Phares has become one of VCA’s most prolific collaborators not only jamming and performing with Vashon’s best and brightest musical stars but bringing in a series of stellar jazz musicians from Seattle and Bellevue.
A multi-talented instrumentalist, Phares is always entertaining and engaging with his performances. An unusually lyrical approach to bass playing places him among some of the top acoustic bass artists in the country, and his personal and inclusive approach to audiences is always welcoming and heartfelt. The Birthday Bash will be an evening of fun, laughter, and excellent music.
