Locals bring blues to the Bike with OneNiteStand

A Vashon blues band that calls itself OneNiteStand will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. Friday for a free show at the Red Bicycle Bistro.

The band plays original songs and covers of blues favorites — members include Luke McQuillin, Mike Nichols, Slab Finley, Gib Dammann, Fletcher Andrews and Matt Eggleston. At Friday’s show, they’ll be joined by singers Terri Garrett and Azula Phillips. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m.

Islander’s film lands at prestigious film festival

“Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton,” a documentary film produced by islander Stephen Silha and directed by Eric Slade, will have its premiere at the prestigious South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in early March.

The film, about the pre-Beat-era poet, pioneer underground filmmaker, gay man and artist who is now considered to be the father of West Coast experimental filmmaking, is one of only eight films in the festival’s documentary film competition.

Later in March, the film will get its international premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and will also screen at the Florida Film Festival in April.

Laugh it up to benefit local art

Save the date of Saturday, March 9, for Improv Night, a fundraiser for Drama Dock and Vashon Center for the Arts. The night, emceed by Andrew McMasters of Seattle’s Jet City Improv, will pit local improv teams against each other in a high-stakes game of audience-generated theatrical hijinks. Tickets for the event cost $10, and include a no-host wine bar and gourmet chocolates.
