Ballet, moden, tap and hip hop wake a slumbering princess

A new dance dimension will help awaken the slumbering princess in VCA Center for Dance’s production of “Sleeping Beauty” slated to open on Friday and run through the weekend, with an open dress rehearsal on Thursday, June 1, at the Kay White Hall.

Modern, tap and hip hop will accompany the traditional ballet under the direction of Center for Dance’s new artistic director, Vadne Domeika.

“I chose Sleeping Beauty because it has a lots of roles, allowing me to give dancing opportunities to all our students, regardless of level or style of dance,” Vadne said.

Woe be it for the fated baby princess Aurora when her parents fail to invite the evil fairy Carabosse (Grace Derrer) to her christening. While her protective fairies bestow the blessings of their namesakes — Joy (Emma Rose DeSantis), Wit (Juliana Wright), Temperament (Talia Royble), Beauty (Marisa McTighe) and Purity (Kelsey Morrison), Carabosse curses Aurora with a spell: On her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger and die.

Unable to reverse the curse, the Lilac Fairy (senior Selah Bellscheidt) makes modifications. Aurora will not die; rather she and the entire kingdom will take an extended nap for 100 years.

The teenage Aurora (senior Juliana Wright) manages, nonetheless, to prick her finger on the spinning wheel gifted to her by the disguised Carabosse on her 16th birthday. Then it’s lights out for a century, until the Lilac Fairy comes to the rescue, once again. She shows a prince (Duncan Barlow), who is riding through the forest, a vision of Aurora dancing. Enchanted, he promises to love her and always be kind.

A happy fairy-tale ending ensues, with the wedding celebration attended by special guests Rapunzel, Pinocchio, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Beauty and The Beast, Red Riding Hood and The Gray Wolf, Snow White and all Seven Dwarfs, The Ivans, Puss ’n’ Boots, Princess Florine and the Bluebird.

Vadne said the pas de duex are the traditional Marius Petipa choreography, but the rest of the dances are choreographed by Christine Juarez, Kathy Bonner, DeSantis, Royble, Vasessa Wiley, Greg Bja, Rico Lastrapes and herself.

“We have tappers as pages and Russian dancers, hip hop dancers as reapers and modern dancers as jesters and Carabosse’s (minions),” Vadne said.

She and her former dance partner Chhay Mam designed the scenery. Kate Guinee created the costumes.

“Sleeping Beauty” will run at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, and at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, at the Kay White Hall. The open dress rehearsal will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1. Tickets are sold at VCA, Heron’s Nest and vashoncenterforthearts.org.
